Sacred Charity
It is clear that a great deal has been accomplished in a decade of
freedom from apartheid and despite such achievements, however,
there are a host of formidable challenges which still face the
nation, including endemic poverty, spiralling unemployment, and the
omnipresent Aids epidemic. The war against poverty and
under-development still rages.
Education is critical to the altering of historically
ingrained divisions of class and race within South Africa, it is a
means to the escape from poverty. Providing children with an
education and encouraging as many as possible to go on to attend
university and significantly improves their employment
opportunities. Increased earning power will enable them to improve
their standard of living and that of their families.
SACRED are currently directly sponsoring the
education of 97 children at
various levels, and with other projects such as the mobile lab;
school
meals ; the computer project, which involves placing computers in
schools
with internet access and provision of libraries and text books - we
are now
touching the lives of over 5200 children.
Health
is also a major problem as South Africa is currently experiencing
one of the most severe AIDS epidemics in the world. At the end of
2007, there were approximately 5.7 million people living with HIV
in South Africa, and almost 1,000 AIDS deaths occurring every day.
AIDS is responsible for leaving 1.5 million children across South
Africa orphaned – almost 50% of the total number of orphans in the
country..
SACRED are funding AIDS education projects and have recently
sponsored the delivery of 120 beds to two health clinics in
Johannesburg.
